I've only recently heard of them and anything perennial, productive and not needing much attention is worth a try isn't it, especially when it is as useful as leeks. I tried growing them from seed in Perth, with mixed success and ended up with 3 tween-aged leeks so far. I'm crossing my fingers that they mature into a permanent supply like yours.
